accessing X11 clipboard

the IM cannot store images in the linux clipboard (as gimp does)
i would like to see this feature
is anybode else interested?

i tried to find out how it is done by looking at the gimp and kolourpaint code, no success....
any suggestions on how it could work or anybody who would help??
