I've tried several ways of making the mask via convert, alpha Shape, fuzz, etc. The original black and white image is smooth, anti-aliased, but the output, no matter which IM technique I use comes out "jagged".

What is the command for getting an anti-aliased mask from a B&W image that is as close to the original as possible?

I am using ImageMagick 6.4.5.

convert --version

Post your image and your command lines so we can see what you are trying to do and see if your image is odd in any way.
