"Warning: recursive semaphore lock detected!" ???

You are out of memory. Try this instead:

convert -limit memory 0 -limit map 0 ./*.jpg -resize 250x250\>

If you are using ImageMagick 6.3.5-9 apply patch discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9767
