Unfortunately, the "-transparent white" will not work in the general case, since all white in the images gets removed. With this image, i was trying to boil down the generic case ...

Yes, you are correct: this is a one page pdf with transparency. I checked my ps:alpha delegate, and I already had pngalpha device set so no luck there.
